In early 2011, Alyssa Bell was working as an independent stylist at Voda Salon & Emporium at 81 Parsons Avenue. By July, she owned the place, and was looking to hire her own independent stylists to work along side of her.
According to Bell, the ownership change came suddenly.
“When the former owners told me that they were leaving the business, I had to make a quick decision on what I wanted to do.”
So in a leap of faith, Bell purchased the business and began the process of moving her family to Olde Towne East. She says that looking back, it set her on an unexpected life path that has been both scary and rewarding.
“I’m so excited to have a hair salon in OTE. I love the people in our neighborhood. Everyone is so supportive of each other!”
As a full-service salon, Voda adds a unique addition to the lineup of businesses on Parsons Ave. To help her keep up with demand, Bell recently added two independent stylists, Ta’Shobe Williams and Meghan Santucci, to join her at the salon.
Ta-Shobe Williams has been behind the chair since 2008 and joined Voda in January 2012. He specializes in natural hair styling, relaxers, extensions, haircuts, haircolor, and facial waxing.
Meghan Santucci has also been a licensed stylist since 2008 and joined the Voda team in February 2012. She specialize in haircuts, color, perms, facial waxing, pedicures and manicures, and Keratin Complex smoothing system.
Both Williams and Santucci say that the artsy, eclectic feel of Olde Towne East has drawn them to work in the neighborhood.
“I love the uniqueness and diversity offered by the historical neighborhood of OTE,” says Williams.
