Oak Street Meats & Seafood Adds to Oak Street’s Small Business Lineup

Oak Street Meats & Seafood has been open at 1117 Oak Street for just over a month now. And in the time it has taken me to get this post up on the website, neighborhood residents and outsiders have had a lot of fun shopping at the local specialty grocer.

Oak Street Meats & Seafood is owned by Allen Scott. It is located right next door to his wholesale meat & seafood business, United Provision Meat Company. According to United’s website, the company was founded in 1939 by Bob Hope (yes, that Bob Hope). United Provision Meat Company now provides meat and seafood to some of Columbus’ finest restaurants and institutions.

Scott first got the idea for the Oak Street Meats & Seafood when he purchased the small retail space next door to his wholesale operation. At the time, the retail location had a lease with an existing tenant. In December 2011, that tenant vacated the property and Scott set out to realize his original vision for a retail meat store.

In the back portion of the store, Scott will sell a variety of steaks, chops, lamb, veal, poultry, and seafood items cut to customer’s specifications. He will also have a variety of seasoning and condiments to complement the selections. The front portion of the market will be leased to a small specialty grocer, selling basic grocery necessities.

On ColumbusUnderground.com’s message board, a local OTE resident and friend of Allen Scott was one of the first customers of the market. He writes:

“Great meats just a few steps from our house. Allen plans to beat the prices at other stores in the area. It won’t be a full service super market, but it will be a heck of a great addition to this part of OTE.”

In addition, Scott hopes to begin hosting different food & retail vendors near the space on Saturdays and Sundays as part of an “Oak Street Market.”

Shopping small, local businesses has always been important for many Olde Towne East residents, and Oak Street Meats & Seafood is a welcome addition to the local businesses developing along Oak Street. We’d like to welcome Allen Scott’s new retail business and wish him the best of luck!

  1. Please excuse my bad use of English, I can remember going to my grandmother’s house Cora Saum, in the 50’s 60’s and playing cards with my grandmother, my mother, my sister, and my Aunt Hazel. My father in his later years would tell me some stories of my grandmothers next door neighbor. My grandmother lived at 1133 Oak St. We lived at 1200 Oak St. My father told me that Bob Hope would come to Columbus and go to the meat shop and look things over, my father said the meat shop didn’t have a telephone so mister Hope would come over to my grandmothers house and use her phone. Not sure how true this maybe, but it makes for a good story.
