Artist Suzanne Betz Gallagher (S. Betz Gallagher) first came to Olde Towne East on the suggestion of Jim Arter, long-time Bryden Road resident and Associate Artist with the Greater Columbus Arts Council. C.S. Gallery on Parsons was looking for an artist to develop a studio in the back of its gallery, and Jim felt that Suzanne was perfect for the space.

But after only 11 months, Suzanne began to outgrow the 300 square foot studio.

Coincidentally, at the same time that Suzanne was looking to expand, the owner of Cleo’s Bridal & Formal on the corner of Oak and Parsons was looking to move on to other opportunities in another city. For Suzanne, the availability of a 1,500 square foot space right next to her existing space was a dream come true.

“I love Olde Towne!,” says Suzanne. “The fabulous new wide open space will feature movable walls, spacious tall ceilings and great energy. And it’s only only two blocks from the Columbus Museum of Art!”

A grand opening of the studio is scheduled for Friday, May 11th from 7-10pm. The grand opening will be a collector’s night, where individuals who purchase a ticket will receive an original sketch from S. Betz Gallagher.

“My Collector’s Nights have been my favorite fun way to raise money for my passion,” says the artist. “It is not just a ticket for an art show, it is an investment in my dream.”

The grand opening will feature entertainment and hors d’oeuvres. Tickets are $30 for individual and $40 for couple (one sketch per ticket; couples have one ticket). Tickets are available by calling 614.202.8106.

The Olde Towne East Neighborhood Association is proud to be one of the sponsors of “The Building Doctor” Clinic, scheduled for May 17-18 at Central Community House, 1150 Main Street.

The Building Doctor is a program of the Ohio Historic Preservation Office, a division of the Ohio Historical Society. According to their website, the Building Doctors “teach building owners how to recognize and solve some of the most common sources of problems in maintaining older buildings, and how to make informed decisions about repairs and improvements.”

What better place to hold this type of workshop than in Olde Towne East? With some of the most beautiful and historically significant properties in the city, this workshop can give Olde Towne East property owners the knowledge to modernize their properties without sacrificing historic integrity.

The first day of the Building Doctors program features a 2-hour free seminar that is open to the public. The seminar will include topics like failing plaster, wet basements, masonry, wood issues, and other issues related to old buildings.

On the following day, the Building Doctors make the rounds of ailing buildings within five miles of the city center where the seminar is held to examine problems and prescribe cures. Their consultations are free, however they are limited and you must ask for an appointment with the Building Doctor when you register for the clinic in advance, and attend the free seminar to qualify.

The Building Doctors visit all kinds of pre-1955 buildings: schools, churches, factories, stores, offices, farm buildings, and homes. If you are selected as one of the second-day site visits, you’ll be contacted in advance of the visit to set up an appointment.

To register for this free event or to get more information, visit the Building Doctor website.

The Old Familiar Barber Shop is now open at 116 Parsons Ave. The Barber Shop joins a diverse lineup of local shops and restaurants along Parsons between Broad Street and Bryden Road.

The shop’s owner, Kenji Prince, makes it clear that Olde Towne East was the ideal place for his new venture. “It’s a great neighborhood,” he says, “lots of exciting business happening there.”

Prince grew up in Columbus. After years of traveling and cutting hair in the “dungeons of the barber underworld” as he calls it, Prince and fellow barber Josh Wilbur decided to join forces to bring the city “a new experience it so deserved.”

We first heard about Prince’s venture in December, when The Metroprenuer interviewed him about how he was getting his business started…

As the name suggests, Old Familiar Barber Shop offers traditional grooming services, like straight razor shaves. However, the shop’s owner, Kenji Prince, is thinking outside the box to offer experiences that are anything but dated.

Like many barbers, Prince dreamed of opening his own shop, “a place where you get to make the rules and tell your kind of jokes,” he says.

“I want to earn a living, but I also want to have fun in life,” he adds. “This is my way of doing both.”

Old Familiar is slated to open in early 2012 at 116 Parsons Ave. in Olde Towne East. Why did Prince choose that particular location?

“It’s across from my favorite bar,” he says, meaning Carabar.

And after only a few days being open, 614 Magazine featured Old Familiar prominently in their article about Columbus barbershops…

The focus at Old Familiar is on gentlemen’s grooming; the vision seems part and parcel of the Short North men’s fashion boutique revival. But don’t be intimidated. It’s still a barbershop in all the best ways: relaxed environs, good conversation, and even a Playboy or two on the racks should you ever have to wait. The proper haircut may take an hour, but it’ll last you six weeks – make the trip to Parsons, and Kenji will tell you himself. He owns the joint, cuts hair like a boss, and put it to me just like this: “I am at the shop every day doing something. If I’m not there, I can be there in 20 minutes.” Also, the shop’s location was no accident. “It’s a great neighborhood [Olde Towne East], lots of exciting business happening there. I wanted a destination shop that brings more people to the area.”

About Our Residents and Tour Guests

Our residents and guests represent several of the most desirable demographic groups for many advertisers. They own homes, are interested in do-it-yourself or renovation projects, are socially aware, are educated, and have buying power. The Olde Towne East homeowners and residents spend a far-above-average amount on home renovations per year.

We see the following in our body of tour attendees:

Young up & comers: Single and/or married young professionals, own a new home or are interested in
buying a home. Do-it-yourselfers with plenty of energy.

Single (but established) men & women: Likely to own their own home and are very interested in renovation
and redecoration. Typically higher income with no children they are interested in high-end and finer wares.

Mature & aware: Interested in history, socially aware and intellectual. They own their own homes. They
have been through the journey of renovation and restoration, and are more likely to use contractors.

Ladies day out: The trip has a big appeal as a multi-generational outing for mother/daughter/grandmother
groups, as well as younger women who are researching their first home purchase.

Meet the 2012 Co-Chairs

Jeff Hamilton

Jeff first came to Olde Towne East about two years ago, where says he fell in love with it immediately.

“It reminds me a lot of my hometown in Northern KY. Besides all the homes with great architecture and tree-lined streets, I really love the sense of community this neighborhood has. Being in a community where people take care of their homes and look out for their neighbors means so much to me. It’s a sense of security to me.”

Jeff says this sense of community encouraged him to get involved with OTENA right from the beginning by joining the membership and green committees, and volunteering for numerous OTENA-sponsored events.

“I wanted to give back to a community that has made me feel welcome and secure,” he explains. “Of all the places that I have lived, I have never seen such a community that cares so much about its neighbors.”

Jeff is very excited to being a co-chair for the 2012 Home Tour.

“I am looking forward to another wonderful tour. I hope that all the visitors on this tour enjoy it as much as I have had fun being a part of it.”

Christy Williams

Christy Williams has lived in Olde Towne East for two and a half years, and she says she can’t imagine why it took her so long to make the move.

“I had thought about moving to Olde Towne East for five years before I finally made the jump,” she says. “Now I’m sorry I missed out for so long!”

She goes on to say that she appreciates the unique “underground” vibe of the east side.

“Everything happening in OTE from business development to events like the Tour of Homes exists at a very community-based, grassroots level. We don’t have big corporate or government sponsors. It’s the residents gathering together that make it happen, and it feels good to own it.”

Christy is owner of VIVIDPOiNT interactive, a web development firm based in Olde Towne East. She also serves on the OTENA Board of Trustees.

The Olde Towne East Neighborhood Association Community Garden is in the final stages of renovations by F & W Properties. The garden plots have been reconfigured to allow for easier mowing and maintenance.

The garden will have 13 plots available for rent of varying sizes. Plots are free for OTENA members and $5 for non-members. All are first come, first served. You can join or renew your membership here.

If you reserve a plot at the garden, it is your responsibility to plant and maintain everything within the boundaries of your plot. Please take good care of it and be mindful of others. 2 plots – 10ft x 15ft

In early 2011, Alyssa Bell was working as an independent stylist at Voda Salon & Emporium at 81 Parsons Avenue. By July, she owned the place, and was looking to hire her own independent stylists to work along side of her.

According to Bell, the ownership change came suddenly.

“When the former owners told me that they were leaving the business, I had to make a quick decision on what I wanted to do.”

So in a leap of faith, Bell purchased the business and began the process of moving her family to Olde Towne East. She says that looking back, it set her on an unexpected life path that has been both scary and rewarding.

“I’m so excited to have a hair salon in OTE. I love the people in our neighborhood. Everyone is so supportive of each other!”

As a full-service salon, Voda adds a unique addition to the lineup of businesses on Parsons Ave. To help her keep up with demand, Bell recently added two independent stylists, Ta’Shobe Williams and Meghan Santucci, to join her at the salon.

Ta-Shobe Williams has been behind the chair since 2008 and joined Voda in January 2012. He specializes in natural hair styling, relaxers, extensions, haircuts, haircolor, and facial waxing.

Meghan Santucci has also been a licensed stylist since 2008 and joined the Voda team in February 2012. She specialize in haircuts, color, perms, facial waxing, pedicures and manicures, and Keratin Complex smoothing system.

Both Williams and Santucci say that the artsy, eclectic feel of Olde Towne East has drawn them to work in the neighborhood.

“I love the uniqueness and diversity offered by the historical neighborhood of OTE,” says Williams.

Voda Salon offers a full range of hair care services for women, men, and children, as well as other beauty services.
